Celebrating the 4th of July in Guatemala

This is what we did for the Fourth of July:             As a team we woke up very early and packed our things because we were moving hotels. We moved from Casa Lola to Hotel Paraiso before going to breakfast at a local restaurant. Even though it’s not paradise (the showers shock you and fireworks are constantly exploding nearby), this hotel is a lot better than we all expected we were going to be staying in. It even has a coconut tree where young men may entertain themselves by knocking coconuts off of it. Eating is always an...

Letters Home

I have been keeping a journal so you’ll know absolutely everything that’s been happening to me. Anyway, they dodrive on the other side of the road here, I don’t remember who I was talking to about that. So, we are in a flat here. There are 8 total, 6 girls and 2 leaders. The ages of the girls range from 15 to 19. There is a summer kids camp that starts on Monday, that is the main thing that we are helping our church with. We have painted a couple of the upstairs rooms in the church and have also attended a few church services with the church that we’re...

Painting Party

After a few days of getting acquainted with the area and our ministry location, we dived right into work. Monday through Wednesday we were all put to work painting the whole upstairs of the church (three Sunday School classrooms and the kitchen), the stairwell, and the nursery downstairs. It was hard work, but the girls and I all plugged away and were pretty proud of our work. Praise God for giving us the strength and perseverance. It’s a very old church building and had a lot of water damage in the walls because of the moisture. So throughout painting we also did some patchwork and...

Annnddd… We’re Off!

I sit here typing this at 10:45 pm.  We have just completed our comissioning service and our last night of training camp.  In about four hours (yes, folks that is 3am. Yikes!) we load up the big yellow bus that brought most of us to Gainesville two days ago, and begin our journey!  These last couple of days of training camp have been a whirlwind of team builders, teachings and time to get to know one another.  I have been so impressed at how our team has jumped right into the craziness of traning camp and their desire to grow together as a little family for the next two...

A Place of Contrasts

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor, he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound” Isaiah 61:1   Guatemala is a place of contrasts. The lake and mountains surrounding us are gloriously beautiful, but the concrete houses and trash-lined streets that make up everyday life here in San Pedro present a very different view. Even though many of the people here live in what Americans would consider extreme poverty they...

Hola!

I am sitting in an internet cafe in Nauta at the moment. We just saw Luke, Emily, Katie, Kyle, Jheri, and Ben perform one of our dramas, it was really powerful. We are in the town square at a campaign which here is like an outdoor christian rally. Mary Beth explained our drama to a pretty big crowd. This is the second night the students have performed here at the square. As Kacie has said we are leaving to go upriver at 5:00 am tomorrow moring. It will be about 10hrs to get upriver and we will return on the 4th (I hope to blog again on the 5th). The team has been an immense blessing to me...
