Visit to a Slum

Hello everyone! Team Kenya is doing well. Here is a little something from my journal… It was written last week but I hope you enjoy… I walked through a Kenyan slum today. When I woke this morning it wasn’t part of my plan.   When the kids found out we were going to Kenya, several of them asked if we could visit “the slums.”  Pastor Joseph thought I should go see it before the children did to determine if they would actually be able to handle it. After arriving, I wondered if I would be able to handle it.   The immediate sights of...

The Days Never End Here…

The past couple of days have flown by as we come near, but continue to finish strong.  Monday lived up to the name of Adventures in Missions with a glacier hike.  It was really amazing.  The next stop was Independence Mine at Hatcher’s Pass.  The buildings still stand reminding us of Alaska’s past, but the highlight for Shane, BJ, Jason, and Casey was the view from the top of the mountain they rediscovered.  Jordan, Lewis, and Carson found a little snow with a little off-trail hiking.  The marmots hung out in the area, and Amanda even fed a squirrel...

Open the Floodgates of Heaven

Well, our humble abode is now shared not only with 9 residents, but also 36-something other residents until the later end of next week. This week has been quite different yet also phenomenal. From Monday to Friday, we have been assisting with Vacation Bible School during the mornings. During the rest of the time, however, we’ve had “treasure hunts” around the mall, a two-hour, straight-up praise and prayer session comparable to the one at the International House of Prayer, acoustic worship sessions in the park during the night (which led to incredible conversations with...

Grey Dreads

This trip has had more ups and downs than I can explain to you. Living here in Bugiri, Uganda had been an experience I could have never imagined. It’s beautiful, strange, mysterious, broken yet healing, and most of all, in need of what we, those who follow Jesus, have to offer: the love the Father has given to us. When we are exhausted, and sticky and smelly and hungry, we remember that love, and push on. Our hope is this: In running the race with diligence we will see the light through the cracks, we will dance upon injustice, and we will encourage those who are sick to “Get...

Daily Schedule

It’s Tuesday morning. Our seventh so far. The sun is shining and there are team members spread around the house journaling, reading and listening to music. Its our hour set apart for quiet time after breakfast and showers. After this we’ll debrief our quiet time to see what God has revealed to each of us. It’s a powerful time when our joy, insecurities, hurts and excitement get voiced. When we pray over hurtful memories or feelings about who we are. Where we, as a team, teach each other how God sees us, instead of what the world sees. After this, we are ready to share life...

Bye-eee

It seems like every country I travel to, the children have a saying that goes along with their country.  In Nairobi, Kenya it was “Mzungu, Mzungu, How are you? How are you?”  In Cebu they greeted us with a hand to the forehead and a “Hello Ate!” Here in Uganda, along with the Mzungu’s and the How are yous, the kids like to say Bye-eee, Bye-eee making a special emphasis on the eee :o)  It is, of course, very cute! Well now it is our time to say Bye-eee and we will be off.  Today we are spending the day cleaning and debriefing as a team. ...
