I Didn’t Even Want to Board the Plane

When people ask me how Guatemala was, I tell them it was really amazing. I share the funny and touching stories and show them my favorite pictures.  But what I don’t mention is how hard it was and all the doubts I had throughout most of the trip.   Coming into this, I just assumed everything would be perfect.  I didn’t even consider all of the possibilities of what could go wrong.  So when a lot of unexpected things happened, I was frustrated and overwhelmed.  First off, I was shy and had trouble fitting in with my team.  I didn’t join in...

Sometimes You Must Dance and Rejoice in the Rain

Swaziland has been experiencing the worst drought in a century. They have not seen a single drop of rain in many months. As some of you may know, if you know me, I have an intense affection for rain and everything that comes along with that. Since the day we arrived, we have all been continually praying and hoping for rain.  Rain has always been something that has had the ability to cleanse my soul and make me feel alive. Some of my fondest memories are those of rainy days spent with the people I love most. The drought in Swaziland has been devastating, crops have been dying, and the...

This Isn’t My Story, It’s His

Kwazi. Kwazi is a little girl I met at Mkhombakati carepoint on Friday. Kwazi is malnourished, she is shy, barley speaks, sad, but she is beautifully and uniquely created by God. Kwazi has a story. I don’t know what it is, but I don’t need to. Kwazi needed me to sit with her, so I did. Mncobi. Mncobi is at the Bheveni carepoint, which I served at a few times. I saw Mncobi twice, and then I didn’t see him for some time.  When I came back he waved at me and said, “Hello, my friend!” To most, I would still be considered a stranger, but to Mcnobi I was a...

TruLife

Kloof Harvest Church near Durban has been our host church these past 2.5 weeks. Ingane Yami is just one of the many programs that Kloof supports in the Durban surrounding areas. Another program which we had the privilege of witnessing is called True Life. True Life is an internship program in which young adults who are interested in dramatic, creative, and media arts use their gifts to reach the children and youth of local primary and secondary schools. We had the opportunity to attend two of these True Life productions in our final week here at Dassenhoek. Half of our team loaded up with...

Unity, the Lionhearted, & the Audible Voice of God

Lovely, fierce, bold, tender, & beautiful all in one are the lionhearted. Okay, let’s look at my life situationally. I committed one month of my life to live in Swaziland, an African country 13,000 miles away, with thirteen people I have never met because I woke up one morning & heard God say, “Let’s get going.” You know, just missionary things. The part I want to focus on is the thirteen strangers. For an introvert, that part of the commitment is the most overwhelming. But here’s the beautiful thing: it is very obvious to me that this team was brought...

The Divine Nature of Creation

It is simply beautiful here. God is constantly present in the mountains that seem to rise up every morning and in the deep red sunsets that end each day with a grand finale. I have the best view where my bunk sits near the window overlooking a vast picture of Manzini. Simply breathtaking. While we travel to the Carepoints, on most days, the drive is also quite a sight to see. My favorite scene is either dusk or dawn when the distant mountains are hidden by shadows created from the sun’s rays, like a layered crescendo. I know those mountains must be created by a fascinating, intricate...
