The DR!

My first experience outside of the country was walking up to a guy in the airport and asking “ Hey, how are you doing?’, and Him simply responding with a smile “ Hola, como esta?” It was like one of those HOLY MOSES this is really happening moments. You know all the time we meet people from all around and some who don’t speak any English it was odd being the one in their shoes..I do believe on my team I was the one who spoke the least Spanish and it was frustrating. At times when everyone else knew what was going on, I had no idea. In ministry some of our...

Buy a Donkey

This week has really been a great one! On Monday we got to go to Linda’s, a children’s home that we have visited before, and work on some construction and hang out with the kids. The kids there speak a little English, so it’s fun to get to talk to them and play with them. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning we got to minister in the colonial we’ve been living in and we did a VBS for the kids here. We had a good time building relationships with them…they’re really full of energy! Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon we went back to the colonial,...

Thank You for a Great Trip

Greetings Stateside, Hello (Scottish accent implied)! As I think of our three weeks together, I smile. I miss you all very much. While I sat at the Atlanta airport Sunday for 8 hours I had a lot of time to review our trip, pray, read my journal and write. The biggest thing that stuck out to me was answered prayer. All of my requests had been answered during the trip. I prayed we would have safety and we did. I prayed we would unite and we did. I prayed we would see someone come to know the Lord and we did. I prayed we would all be challenged in our faith and to grow and I am pretty...

Newspaper Article about Adventures in Haiti

Mission trip to Haiti finds people there STILL STRUGGLING by Sherri Phengchard   Litter and rubble still cover the streets of Haiti where despite a massive relief effort little has changed for the people of the Caribbean island nation devastated by an earthquake six months ago.     The mountains that stretch over Port-au-Prince, a city of 700,000, seem strong and eternal, arching their backs above the human turmoil of this broken capital city of Haiti. On the opposite side of this city, to the south, the cobalt blue Gulf of Mexico laps resolutely. The shore is a...

Actions Speak Louder Than Words

As I process and look back on the past month in Kenya and think about all the amazing ways I saw God move I keep coming back to the word community. “Community means caring: caring for people. Dietrich Bonhoeffer[1] says: “He who loves community destroys community; he who loves the brethren builds community.” A community is not an abstract ideal. We are not striving for perfect community. Community is not an ideal; it is people. It is you and I. In community we are called to love people just as they are with their wounds and their gifts, not as we would want them to...
