Living that Tico Life

Tico means Costa Rican. We love it here. As we dive into culture and have conversation with locals, we are learning what it looks like to love and serve this culture well. From VBS to painting a community center to Olympic games with neighborhood kids, this team has been BUSY. Yesterday we went out into San Jose to get a little bit out of our comfort zone. We evangelized to the locals, sharing the name of Jesus.  “We started out timid and ended the day with a new confidence.” Emma Williams  Here’s a little glimpse into our time here so far:  ...

Home sick but heart warmed

Right now there are a million different things I wish that I could tell my mom. How much I miss her. How I miss her voice. How frustrated I am that the device I could use to talk to her is five feet away, but I’m not allowed to use… for good reason (or so I’ve been told, haha). How much I miss my siblings. How much I miss hugs from my dad. How tired I am of hearing their voices over the phone and not in person. How much I miss all the little things that they do that seem to make my life complete. I miss so much at home back in the United States, but somehow THIS is exactly...

Dios Sabe – Ecuadorian Faith

Faith, love, and head nods are universal. Yet, something I have observed in Ecuador is a bold, thirsty faith—not that this front forward trust isn’t in other places, but here the openness of the people magnifies their undeniable reliance upon God. Here, people are willing to step out in faith to receive songs and prayers in a language they do not understand.  In contrast, I am guilty of being comfortable in my faith. When Christianity is free and open—as in our great country—sitting in comfort can be very dangerous. With all the resources and churches we...

Team Ministry

Ministry this past week has looked a little different than what we all envisioned.  We didn’t actually get to Swaziland until Wednesday night, and only started “real” ministry at a care point on Friday.  So what have we done the rest of the time?  I like to think of it as team ministry: getting to know, care, and love each other.  It’s been hard.  Seventeen girls, who just met each other, living together 24/7 is as difficult as it sounds.  Especially when it consists of sleeping on the floor in...

Team USA, Day 9: A Different Kind of Independence Day

Today was my favorite 4th of July I’ve ever experienced. Instead of going to the beach or a park, we went to Pacific Gardens Mission. Many of those who are in or who have completed the New Day program (rehab and Biblical study) work at the mission, and since we have been working mostly in the kitchen, we get to see most of the same people each time we go. For the 4th of July, PGM threw a massive block party for the residents and visitors! They had a huge barbecue, Sno-Cones, Bags (or “Cornhole,” depending on where you’re from!), face painting, basketball, a bouncy...

First Impressions

It’s been a whole week since this journey began and I can honestly say that time has flown. Never before have I felt God’s presence so strongly for so long, yet I know He’s not going anywhere – I’ve never felt like I was supposed to be somewhere like how I feel like I’m supposed to be here. These girls have become like family so quickly. Laughter echoes through our house and I know I can talk to every girl about anything and they will listen. I can’t help but thank God that he put them in my life....
